A Color Drenched Kitchen Remodel in Kessler Park

Our clients came to us after purchasing a 1950s cottage in the Kessler Park neighborhood in Dallas. This sweet home had undergone some unfortunate renovations over the years and our task, in addition to reworking the kitchen layout, was to infuse character and personality into the kitchen and guest bathroom to reflect our clients’ vibrant and creative style. To do that we created a design featuring color drenched kitchen with two tone cabinets along with custom terrazzo countertops to pay homage to the mid-century period of the home. For the bathroom, we used a colorful palette of reds and blush tones to create a charming refresh to the otherwise builder-basic bathroom.

The Color Drenched Kitchen Before…

The existing kitchen had multiple problems: it was dark, unnecessarily small, and had multiple unnecessary floor level changes that screamed “piecemeal renovation.” The laundry room on the exterior wall to the right of the fridge was cramped and made the entire space darker by blocking light that could be flooding in from the backyard. The island was small without a lot of room for prep and no exhaust for the range, the existing cabinets, while in good shape, were not the right style for the home.

To address the issues with layout we removed the laundry room and relocated it to the pantry which allowed us to open up the plan south wall and extend the windows flooding the space with light. We also removed the non-load-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining, all of which allowed for a much more cohesive kitchen layout complete with a larger kitchen, tall pantry cabinet, and room for seating whether our clients are entertaining guests in the adjacent sunroom or dining room/living area.

We always try to be respectful of our clients’ budgets and work with what is already there, however, in this case, our client asked about enlarging the window on the plan south wall. This turned out to be money very well spent, since reworking the windows allowed us to fit a much large pantry cabinet and flood the space with light.
