How to Find Your Interior Design Style in 3 Easy Steps
Whether you've just moved into a new home or you're looking to refresh your current space, you might be wondering how to find your interior design style. This can be a challenging task, as it’s a deeply personal journey that reflects your tastes, memories, and lifestyle.
In this post, I’ll break down the exact 3 steps I take on almost every project to create highly personalized spaces tailored for my clients. I truly believe that best spaces are those that truly reflect the people who live in them, capturing their tastes, memories, and lifestyle. At Paige Studio, we assist clients who have a clear vision for their space as well as those who need guidance in discovering their style.
There’s no right or wrong way to design your home—it's about uncovering what resonates with you. If you’re unsure how to find your interior design style, keep reading to learn how to pinpoint and define your personal interior aesthetic.
How to Find Your Interior Design Style:
Step #1: Let Your Mind Wander…
Grab your favorite beverage, cozy up in your favorite corner where you can relax, grab your laptop or your favorite magazine and start reading or pinning. Whether you prefer Pinterest, Google Images, or your favorite home decor site, begin browsing with an open mind. Save anything that catches your eye without overthinking it. The goal here is to gather a broad range of inspiration, allowing your subconscious preferences to surface.
At Paige Studio, we create folders with over 100 images for some of our projects to start identifying patterns. Remember, finding your interior design style should be an enjoyable and stress-free process, so don't worry about curating a specific aesthetic just yet.
Step 2: Find the Theme in Your Inspiration Images
After collecting a variety of images, it’s time to look for common themes. As you review your saved photos, you might notice trends such as a preference for blue tones, natural materials, or a mix of traditional architecture with modern furnishings. These recurring elements will help you understand your design preferences more clearly. Identifying these themes is a crucial step in finding your interior design style.
Step 3: Curate a Concept Board for Your Interior Design Style
With a better understanding of your style, the next step is to create a concept board. This can be digital or physical—whatever suits you best. Your concept board will serve as a reference point when selecting pieces for your home and this is where you start refining your vision. For example, if you've saved images of marble shower surrounds, now is the time to look for images of the details you prefer such as tile size or layout. While it doesn’t need to be exact, having a clear idea of some of the details will help to guide your future design decisions.
I recommend creating an mood board instead of a collection of images in folders or Pinterest boards for this step to allow you to visualize your interior design style holistically. Tools like Canva or PowerPoint are excellent for digital boards, or you can get creative with scissors and glue for a physical board.
So there you have it, that is the exact process I use when starting each new Paige Studio project for a client, and now you can use it to craft your personal interior design style.
